You are driving the car from which the picture is taken and are unsure whether you are driving on a priority road. How should you reason, given the road to the right?

  • Incorrect: Assume that the right hand rule applies, which means I am obliged to give way to traffic from the road to the right.
  • Incorrect: Assume that I am not driving on a priority road, which means I am obliged to give way to traffic from the road to the right.
  • Incorrect: Assume that I am driving on a private road, which means I am obliged to give way to traffic from the road to the right.
  • Correct: Assume that vehicles coming from the road to the right are obliged to give way to me.

There are 3 things indicating that vehicles coming from the right are obliged to give way to you:

  1. It looks like a give way sign.
  2. It looks like a give way line.
  3. The road you are driving on is wide and the likelihood of it being a priority road is very high.

These factors together suggest you can be fairly sure that vehicles coming from the right are obliged to give way to you.

Almost nobody can keep an eye on all signs and instructions the entire time. It is therefore important to be able to draw reasonable conclusions about what rules apply using clues.
