Requirements for taking a driving licence in Sweden – different qualifications

The following is an overview of driving licence qualifications in Sweden. Detailed requirements, for example pertaining to those with a driving licence in another EEA country, can be found at Swedish Transport Agency.

AM – moped class I (EU moped)

Requirements for AM

  • 15 years old.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Undergone training for an AM licence.
  • Successfully completed a theory test (no practical driving test is required).

Vehicles you may drive with an AM licence

  • Moped class I (EU moped)
  • Moped class II
  • Tractor
  • Heavy equipment class II

A1 – light motorcycle

Requirements for A1 driving licence

  • 16 years old.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Risk training.
  • Successfully completed a theory test and a practical driving test.

Vehicles you may drive with an A1 licence

  • Light motorcycle
  • Moped class I and class II
  • Tractor
  • Heavy equipment class II

A2 – medium-sized motorcycle

Requirements for A2 driving licence

  • 18 years old.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Risk training.
  • Successfully completed a theory test and a practical driving test.

Vehicles you may drive with an A2 licence

  • Medium-sized motorcycle
  • Moped class I and class II
  • Tractor
  • Heavy equipment class II

A – heavy motorcycle

Requirements for A driving licence

  • 24 years old (20 years old if possessing an A2 licence for 2 years).
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Risk training.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and a practical driving test. If you already have an A1 or A2 licence, you do not need to do the theory test.

Vehicles you may drive with an A licence

  • Heavy motorcycle
  • Moped class I and class II
  • Tractor
  • Heavy equipment class II

B – private car

Requirements for B driving licence

Vehicles you may drive with a B licence

  • Private car or light lorry with a total weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes.
  • Off-road vehicles.
  • Moped class I and class II.
  • Three- and four-wheeled motorcycles.
  • Tractor.
  • Heavy equipment class I and II.

Extended B (“conditions/code 96”)

Requirements for extended B driving licence

  • B licence.
    • It is also possible to take an extended B driving licence at the same time as the regular B licence. The only difference is that you have to do an additional practical driving test for the extended B licence.
  • Have successfully completed a practical driving test for an extended B qualification.

Vehicle combinations you may drive beyond those allowed by a regular B licence

  • Vehicle combinations where the total combined weight of the car and trailer is a maximum of 4.25 tonnes.

BE – private car with heavy trailer

Requirements for BE driving licence

  • 18 years old.
  • B licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and a practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive in addition to those allowed by a regular B licence

  • Private car or light lorry with a total weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes and one or more trailers coupled to such a vehicle, if the total combined weight of the trailer(s) does not exceed 3.5 tonnes.

C1 – medium-duty lorry

Requirements for C1 driving licence

  • 18 years old.
  • B licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and a practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a C1 licence

  • Heavy lorry with a total weight not exceeding 7.5 tonnes and private car with a total weight of over 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes. A trailer with a total weight of no more than 750 kg may be coupled to the above vehicle.

C1E – medium-duty lorry with heavy trailer

Requirements for C1E driving licence

  • 18 years old.
  • C1 or C driving licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a C1E licence

  • Car encompassed by authorisation C1 or B and one or more trailers which are coupled to such a vehicle, if the total combined weight of the car and the trailer(s) does not exceed 12 tonnes.

C – heavy lorry

Requirements for C driving licence

  • 21 years old*
  • B licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a C licence

  • Heavy lorry and private car with a total weight in excess of 3.5 tonnes. A trailer with a total weight of no more than 750 kg may be coupled to the above vehicle.

CE – heavy lorry with heavy trailer

Requirements for CE driving licence

  • 21 years old*
  • C licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a CE licence

  • Car encompassed by a category C licence and one or more trailers, regardless of weight, coupled to such a car.

D1 – medium-sized bus

Requirements for D1 driving licence

  • 21 years old*
  • B licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a D1 licence

  • Bus that has been constructed and manufactured for no more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and which does not exceed 8 metres in length. A trailer with a total weight of no more than 750 kg may be coupled to the above vehicle.

D1E – medium-sized bus with heavy trailer

Requirements for D1E driving licence

  • 21 years old*
  • D1 or D licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a D1E licence

  • Bus encompassed by a category D1 licence and one or more trailers, regardless of weight, coupled to such a bus.

D – bus

Requirements for D driving licence

  • 24 years old*
  • B licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a D licence

  • Bus, regardless of length and the number of seats. A trailer with a total weight of no more than 750 kg may be coupled to the above vehicle.

DE – bus with heavy trailer

Requirements for DE driving licence

  • 24 years old*
  • D licence.
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed the theory test and practical driving test.

Vehicle combinations you may drive with a DE licence

  • Bus encompassed by a category D licence and one or more trailers, regardless of weight, coupled to such a bus.

Tractor licence

  • 16 years old (15 under special circumstances).
  • Learner’s permit.
  • Have successfully completed a theory test (no practical driving test is required).

Driver’s certificate moped class II

  • 15 years old.
  • Have undergone training for a moped class II licence.
  • Have successfully completed a theory test (no practical driving test is required).

Driver’s certificate snowmobile

  • 16 years old.
  • Have undergone training for a snowmobile.
  • Have successfully completed a theory test (no practical driving test is required).

Driver’s certificate off-road vehicle

  • 16 years old.
  • Have undergone training for an off-road vehicle.
  • Have successfully completed a theory test (no practical driving test is required).

* Lower age requirement if you undergone basic training according to the Act on Professional Driving Competence.
