Which statement is true regarding pedestrians and pedestrian crossings?

  • Correct: Pedestrians have obligations; for example, they are not allowed to cross the road unreasonably slowly.
  • Incorrect: Pedestrians are the weaker party and therefore have no obligations. The vehicle drivers are the ones who have obligations.

A pedestrian crossing shall be crossed “without undue delay”. (Swedish Road Traffic Ordinance)

Examples of how this should be interpreted:

  • A young and healthy person clears the pedestrian crossing in 10 seconds.
    – “Undue delay”, as the person could cross much faster.
  • An elderly person with a cane clears the pedestrian crossing in 10 seconds.
    – No “undue delay”, as the person is unable to walk any faster.
