The traffic signal ahead of you that is changing to amber is a repetition (a reinforcement) of the signal you passed before the junction. The key factor in this question is that your car is already on the junction, not before it.


Amber (SIG4)
“Stop. A vehicle may not pass the Stop line or, if there is no such line, the signal unless it has come so far when the signal changes from green to amber that it cannot stop without risk. Signals with an arrow outline only apply in the direction or directions indicated by the arrow.”

Put simply, we can say that the amber signal after the junction is an extra source of help for you and other road-users. It makes the junction clearer. Your actions, however, should be determined by the signal before the junction – i.e. the green signal you passed at the start of the video.


Green (SIG3)
“Vehicles may continue straight ahead. A green arrow indicates that the signal applies to the direction in which the arrow points. Vehicles may be driven in the arrow’s direction even if another signal is showing at the same time.”

Taking a more in-depth approach, we can say that you have passed the Stop line before the junction in a correct manner (with a green light). The repeated signal does not have its own Stop line (the road marking there denotes a bicycle passage). It cannot, however, be considered that a Stop line is missing, because this signal is a repetition of another signal that does have a Stop line. The fact that the signal cannot be considered to be missing a Stop line is important, because you must only stop before the signal if a Stop line is missing.

Think also about the situation that would arise if you did stop. You would be stationary and blocking the junction for turning traffic that will shortly be getting a green light. These road-users would have a green light, but your (incorrect) interpretation that the signal ahead of you would cause you to believe that you have a red light. This would create a gridlock situation where nobody would be able to move forwards. Note also that no hazardous situation would arise if you were to continue driving, and this would not create problems for anybody else.

Does this not have anything to do with my ability to stop without risk?
– No. That only applies before the junction, not when you are already in the middle of the junction.

Is it not better to take the safest option, and stop?
– No, not in this instance, because you would then be stationary and blocking the junction for turning traffic that will shortly be getting a green light. Stopping here would actually be the least safe option.
