You are in the right lane. When should you change to the left?

  • Correct: As soon as possible, so that I do not risk getting stuck in the right lane.
  • Incorrect: As late as possible, since the left lane is to be used by overtaking vehicles.
  • Incorrect: As soon as possible, but I must have passed the sign before I can change lanes.

Getting stuck in the right lane is bad for many reasons:

  • You have to brake or stop, which is not environmentally friendly.
  • Other cars may be unsure/confused when you are standing still and waiting to change lanes = creating uncertainty.
  • It is annoying for you to wait.

You may also change lanes before the sign. There is nothing in the picture to suggest otherwise.
