“When a driver intends to start from one side of the road or to turn, turn around, change lanes or change the lateral positioning of the vehicle in anything other than an insignificant manner, the driver shall give a signal using the direction indicators in order to signal their intention.” (Road Traffic Ordinance)
You may think it is obvious that you intend to turn left, but the purpose of the direction indicators is to inform other road-users. Not everybody can be sure of which lane arrow is painted on the lane you are in. Imagine, for example, that a queue has formed behind you. It would then be impossible for others to see the lane arrow, because it will be blocked by stationary cars.
