Which of the following statements regarding worn tyres with poor tread depth is true?

  • Incorrect: Worn tyres work better than new tyres in the rain, but worse under normal conditions.
  • Correct: Worn tyres work particularly badly in the rain.
  • Incorrect: When it is raining, there is no difference in grip level between worn and new tyres.

It is the grooves/treads in the tyre that drain off water. Without these, the tyre becomes like a boat (the hull of a boat is smooth so that it can flow well; not a desirable characteristic in a car tyre).
