On the other side of the hill, there may be dangers all around.

If you place the car far to the left, you increase the risk of colliding with oncoming traffic.

If you drive far to the right, you increase the risk of hitting a pedestrian or a cyclist on the side of the road. The same is true if you go on the hard shoulder (which is the worst alternative by far in this question).

The best compromise is to stick to the middle of your lane.
