The driver first turns the wheel normally for the car to turn through a curve.

The driver then notices that the car is not reacting sufficiently, so they turn the wheel more sharply.

However, there is not enough friction between the tyres and the road. Without friction, the car will remain on the same course. But now there is some friction, which means that the car both continues straight ahead and at the same time turns sharply to the right.

Note that the driver keeps the wheels pointing in the direction of the road, which is good. Without the turn of the wheels, the car would have continued straight ahead and thereby driven off the road much sooner.
