The red car in the centre of the picture is turning directly into the right. What do you think about the positioning?

  • Incorrect: Good, since the driver is taking the pedestrian into account and leaving a good safety margin.
  • Correct: Bad, since the driver is in the middle of the lane and blocking the traffic behind.

When turning right, a vehicle shall be positioned as close to the carriageway’s right edge as possible, within reason.” (Swedish Road Traffic Ordinance)

The idea that positioning your car in the middle of the lane would allow a “good safety margin” for the pedestrian sounds strange. Would it be less safe to position your car more to the right?
