When must you clear a path for an emergency vehicle?

  • Incorrect: Always.
  • Correct: When they have their sirens or blue lights on.

Emergency vehicles: “You must clear a path when they are driving with their sirens or rotating blue lights on.” (Driving Licence Book, 19th Edition, page 47)

There are many situations where emergency vehicles (police, ambulance and fire engine) are out in traffic without being on an emergency call, for example, on their way back from a call out or when they are refuelling. In such situations, there is no reason to clear a path.
