The basic rule for crossing a railway is to spend as little time as possible on the tracks. Driving across quickly is therefore best. Since you have slowed down before, this means you will not be driving at an illegal speed. The rapid acceleration compensates for the speed reduction prior to crossing. With in a lower gear, the car becomes more powerful (has more thrust) and the risk of stalling decreases. Note that you should already be in a lower gear before crossing over the tracks.
Blindly trusting signals is never a good idea. A broken signal lamp may result in death.
